How to Improve Home Heating Efficiency This Winter

A home that feels cold an hour after the heating has been on is usually losing heat, distributing it poorly, or asking the boiler to work harder than it needs to. Knowing how to improve home heating efficiency is not just about turning the thermostat down. It is about making sure the whole system - from the boiler and controls to radiators, pipework and insulation - works together properly.

Some improvements are quick and low-cost. Others, such as replacing an ageing boiler or upgrading controls, need professional advice. The right approach depends on your property, the age and condition of your heating system, and how you use each room.

Start with the heat you already produce

Before considering a new boiler, look at whether your existing heating is reaching the rooms effectively. A boiler can be working perfectly, but poor radiator performance, incorrect settings or heat loss through the building can still leave you with higher bills and uneven comfort.

Set your room thermostat to a sensible, steady temperature. For many households, around 18-21°C is comfortable, although this varies with age, health and personal preference. Raising the thermostat by just a degree can increase energy use, so it is worth finding the lowest setting that keeps your home genuinely comfortable.

Avoid switching the heating on and off at random to chase the temperature. A timed schedule that matches your daily routine is usually more efficient. If you are out during the day, programme the heating to warm the house shortly before you return rather than heating empty rooms for hours.

Improve home heating efficiency with better controls

Heating controls are one of the most useful upgrades for a home with an otherwise sound system. They allow you to heat the right areas at the right time, rather than relying on one basic timer for the whole property.

A programmable thermostat helps maintain a regular temperature, while thermostatic radiator valves, often called TRVs, allow you to reduce heat in rooms that are used less often. A spare bedroom, hallway or storage room does not always need the same level of heating as the living room.

Smart controls can be helpful for households with changing schedules, rental properties or busy family routines. They can make it easier to adjust heating from a mobile phone and spot patterns in use. However, a smart thermostat will not solve a poorly balanced system or a boiler that is too old and inefficient. Good controls work best when the rest of the system is in reasonable condition.

Your boiler settings matter too. Many condensing boilers operate most efficiently when they can recover heat from the flue gases. This is more likely at lower heating flow temperatures, but turning the temperature down too far can mean radiators struggle to warm larger or poorly insulated rooms. An engineer can advise on a suitable setting and check that it is appropriate for your radiators and property.

Make radiators work evenly

If some rooms are warm while others stay chilly, do not assume you need a bigger boiler. The issue may be sludge, trapped air, a sticking valve or an unbalanced heating system.

A radiator that is cold at the top may need bleeding. One that is cold at the bottom can indicate sludge or debris in the system. In older systems, this build-up restricts water flow and makes the boiler work harder to deliver the same level of heat. Cleaning the system, fitting suitable protection and checking the circulation pump can restore performance where those are the underlying problems.

Balancing is another commonly missed step. This involves adjusting radiator valves so heated water is shared properly around the property. Without balancing, radiators nearest the boiler may take most of the heat, while those further away take much longer to warm up. It is a detailed job, but it can make a noticeable difference to comfort without changing the boiler itself.

Do not cover radiators with heavy furniture or long curtains. Both can trap heat and prevent it circulating into the room. If a radiator sits on an external wall, reflective panels behind it may help reduce heat lost through the wall, particularly in older homes with limited insulation.

Stop heat escaping from the property

The cheapest heat is the heat you do not lose. Loft insulation, cavity wall insulation where suitable, and improved glazing can all reduce the amount of heating your home needs. These are larger projects, but they often make the biggest difference in properties that feel draughty or cool down quickly.

There are smaller jobs worth doing first. Seal gaps around external doors, letterboxes, loft hatches and pipe entries. Fit draught excluders where needed and close curtains at dusk to reduce heat loss through windows. Keep curtains clear of radiators, otherwise much of the warmth will be directed towards the glass rather than into the room.

Take care not to block designed ventilation, particularly around boilers, fires or in kitchens and bathrooms. Your property still needs suitable airflow to manage moisture and maintain safety. The aim is to stop uncontrolled draughts, not to seal the home completely.

Check whether the boiler is holding you back

An older non-condensing boiler can use considerably more fuel than a modern condensing model. If yours is unreliable, costly to repair, slow to heat the home or approaching the end of its working life, replacement may be more economical than continuing with repeated call-outs.

A modern combi boiler can be an efficient option for many homes because it provides hot water on demand and removes the need for a separate hot water cylinder. It can be particularly suitable for smaller to medium-sized homes with one bathroom and limited storage space.

That said, a combi boiler is not automatically the right answer for every property. Larger homes with several bathrooms or high simultaneous hot water demand may benefit from an unvented cylinder or a different system design. Boiler size should also be based on the property’s heat demand and hot water use, not simply chosen as the largest available model.

A professional survey should consider radiator output, existing pipework, water pressure, flue position and where the boiler will be installed. Relocating a boiler can improve access or free up kitchen space, but it may involve additional pipework, electrical work and flue alterations. A clear plan at the start avoids unnecessary disruption later.

Look after hot water as well as heating

Heating efficiency is not only about radiators. Hot water use also affects your gas consumption, especially in homes with frequent showers, baths or high occupancy.

Set cylinder temperatures correctly if you have a stored hot water system. The cylinder should be hot enough to meet safety requirements, while controls should prevent it being heated unnecessarily throughout the day. Insulating accessible hot water pipes and ensuring the cylinder jacket is in good condition can reduce standing heat loss.

With a combi boiler, avoid leaving a hot water preheat function on if it does not suit your routine. Preheat can reduce the wait for hot water at the tap, but it may use a little more gas to keep the boiler ready. For some households, the added convenience is worthwhile; for others, switching it off is a simple saving.

Keep the system serviced and maintained

An annual boiler service is not just a paperwork exercise. It gives a qualified engineer the opportunity to check safe operation, identify worn parts, test performance and spot issues before they become a breakdown in the middle of winter.

Watch for warning signs between services: banging or whistling noises, pressure regularly dropping, leaking pipework, radiators that need frequent bleeding, or hot water that fluctuates in temperature. These faults can affect efficiency as well as reliability.
