Why Your Boiler Loses Pressure — And What You Should Do Before Calling an Engineer

Understanding Boiler Pressure
Your boiler relies on the right level of pressure to circulate hot water around your home. When the pressure drops too low, the system struggles — radiators go cold, hot water becomes unreliable, and the boiler may shut down completely.
Most boilers should sit around 1.0–1.5 bar when cold.
If you’ve noticed the gauge dropping below 1 bar, here’s what could be happening.
❗ Common Reasons Your Boiler Loses Pressure
1. A Small Leak in the System
This is the number one cause.
It might be:
- A tiny drip from a radiator valve
- A pinhole leak in pipework
- A leaking expansion vessel or PRV
These leaks are often so small you won’t see water on the floor — but over time, they cause pressure loss.
2. Bleeding Radiators Recently
When you bleed radiators, trapped air escapes — and pressure drops.
This is normal.
You’ll just need to top the system back up afterwards.
3. Faulty Pressure Relief Valve (PRV)
If the PRV has lifted due to over‑pressure or age, it may not reseal properly.
This causes a slow, continuous loss of pressure.
4. Expansion Vessel Issues
If the expansion vessel loses its internal charge, the system can’t manage pressure correctly.
This often leads to:
- Pressure rising too high when hot
- PRV releasing water
- Pressure dropping too low when cold
A classic sign of a failing vessel.
🔧 How to Safely Re‑Pressurise Your Boiler
Most modern boilers allow you to top up the pressure using a filling loop.
Steps (general guide):
1. Turn the boiler off and let it cool
2. Locate the filling loop (usually a silver braided hose)
3. Open the valves slowly
4. Watch the gauge rise to 1.2–1.5 bar
5. Close the valves firmly
If the pressure drops again within hours or days, you likely have an underlying issue.
🚨 When You Should Call an Engineer
You should get a professional involved if:
- Pressure keeps dropping even after topping up
- You can hear hissing or see signs of leaks
- The PRV pipe outside is dripping
- The boiler locks out repeatedly
- You’re topping up more than once a month
These symptoms point to a fault that needs proper diagnosis.
