What boiler sludge is and why it forms
Despite the name, sludge is not usually dirt that has entered from outside. It is mainly a dark, gritty material called magnetite, created when the metal parts within a heating system corrode over time. Small amounts of oxygen entering the system can react with steel radiators, pipework and other components, producing fine black particles that circulate with the heating water.
Those particles eventually settle in slower-flowing areas. Radiators, especially at their lower edges, are a common collection point. Sludge can also build up in pipework, circulation pumps, valves and the boiler’s heat exchanger.
Older open-vented systems can be more prone to this because they have a feed and expansion tank in the loft, although sealed systems are not immune.
