A wet room can make a compact bathroom feel larger, easier to clean and more comfortable to use. But knowing how to plan a wet room properly matters far more than choosing the tiles. The floor must drain exactly as intended, every vulnerable surface needs waterproofing, and the room needs enough warmth and ventilation to stay dry between showers.
Done well, a wet room is a practical long-term improvement for family homes, accessible bathrooms, en suites and rental properties. Done poorly, it can lead to water escaping into adjoining rooms, loose tiles, mould and expensive repairs. Start by deciding whether a wet room suits the space
A true wet room has a shower area that is level with, or very close to, the rest of the floor. Rather than relying on a conventional shower tray and enclosure, the floor is formed with a gradual fall towards a drain. The walls and floor are then fully waterproofed beneath the finish.
This arrangement works particularly well in small bathrooms where a shower enclosure would make the room feel cramped. It is also a sensible choice where step-free access is a priority. The extent of waterproofing should match the design. At minimum, the shower zone and floor require full protection. Choose tiles with grip and sensible proportions
Large-format tiles can look smart, but they are not always the easiest choice for a shower floor with multiple falls. Smaller tiles, including mosaics, follow contours more readily and offer more grout lines for grip. This can make them a practical option in the shower area, while larger tiles can still be used on the walls or drier parts of the floor.
Look for tiles rated for wet-floor use and consider how they feel under bare feet. A highly polished tile may suit a wall but can become slippery when wet. Matte porcelain is often a durable, low-maintenance choice, though the right finish depends on the look you want and the level of slip resistance required.
Keep grout joints and sealant lines practical. Pale grout can brighten a room, but it may need more regular cleaning. Good-quality grout and neatly finished silicone around sanitaryware will help the room retain its appearance, but neither should be treated as a substitute for proper tanking.
Plan warmth and ventilation at the same time
Wet rooms deal with more airborne moisture than a typical bathroom, so ventilation needs to be effective and correctly sized.
