
How to Design a Fitted Kitchen That Works

A fitted kitchen can look excellent in a showroom and still feel frustrating at home. The difference is usually not the cabinet colour or the door style. It is whether the layout suits the room, the way your household cooks, and the plumbing and electrical work hidden behind the units. Knowing how to design a fitted kitchen starts with those practical decisions, before choosing finishes.
A well-planned kitchen should make everyday tasks easier, allow enough room for more than one person to move around, and give appliances the services they need without awkward compromises. Getting the foundations right also helps keep installation disruption and unexpected costs under control.
Start with the room, not the catalogue
Measure the kitchen carefully, including wall lengths, ceiling height, window and door openings, radiators, boiler cupboards, pipes, soil stacks and any boxed-in services. Do not assume walls are straight or corners are square, particularly in older properties. A professional site survey will pick up details that a quick tape measure can miss.
Think about how the room is used at different times of day. A household that cooks from scratch most evenings needs generous preparation space and easy access to pans, ingredients and waste. A family kitchen may need a clear route between the fridge, table and garden door. In a smaller flat or rental property, durable surfaces and simple access for maintenance can matter more than having every possible appliance.
Natural light also affects the design. Tall units placed either side of a window can work well, but a bank of full-height cabinets may make a narrow kitchen feel darker. Where space is limited, lighter cabinet fronts, sensible task lighting and an uncluttered worktop can make a real difference.
Plan the working layout first
The classic working triangle between the fridge, sink and hob remains useful, but it is not a fixed rule. The aim is to avoid unnecessary walking and prevent two people constantly crossing the same path. In a galley kitchen, for example, a sink opposite the hob can be practical if there is enough clear space between runs. In an open-plan room, the kitchen may need zones rather than a strict triangle.
Keep the main preparation area close to both the sink and hob. A stretch of worktop between them is often the hardest-working part of the kitchen, so do not lose it to a bulky coffee machine or a draining board that is never put away. Allow landing space beside the fridge, oven and hob too. You need somewhere safe to place hot trays, shopping bags and ingredients.
Clearances matter as much as cabinet sizes. Aim for enough room to open an oven, dishwasher or fridge door without trapping someone behind it. Kitchen aisles need to accommodate open drawers and people passing through. If an island is being considered, check it will improve the room rather than simply reduce circulation space.
Choose a layout that suits the space
A single-wall layout can be effective in compact homes, but it needs disciplined storage and enough uninterrupted worktop. An L-shaped kitchen usually gives good workflow while leaving space for a dining table. A U-shaped plan offers plenty of storage and preparation room, although it can feel enclosed if tall units are overused.
Peninsulas and islands are useful for separating an open-plan kitchen from a living area, adding seating or creating more cupboard space. They also bring extra requirements. An island with a sink or hob needs carefully planned water, waste, gas or electrical services below the floor. It may require floor finishes to be lifted and reinstated, so it should be decided early, not added as an afterthought.
Design plumbing and appliances together
Plumbing is one of the main reasons a kitchen plan changes during installation. Keeping the sink, dishwasher and washing machine near existing water and waste connections is usually the most cost-effective option. Moving them is possible, but the route for new pipework and waste needs to be checked before cabinets are ordered.
Waste pipes need a suitable fall to drain properly. In some properties, particularly where the new sink is a long way from the original position, achieving that fall can affect cabinet layouts or require additional work. A good design accounts for this rather than hiding a difficult problem behind fitted units.
If you are relocating a boiler, fitting a new combi boiler, or replacing an older heating system as part of the renovation, coordinate the work before the kitchen is installed. Boiler access, condensate pipework, flue position and servicing clearances all need consideration. Boxing in a boiler may be possible, but it must remain accessible and comply with the manufacturer’s requirements.
Appliance choices should be made early too. Integrated and freestanding appliances have different dimensions, ventilation needs and door arrangements. Confirm the exact models, not just the category. A tall fridge freezer, a range cooker or a built-in coffee machine can affect cabinet sizes, electrical circuits and extraction requirements.
Do not treat extractor fans as decoration. Recirculating hoods can be suitable where external ducting is impractical, but extraction to the outside generally removes moisture, odours and cooking pollutants more effectively. The best option depends on the property and available route for ducting.
Build storage around real habits
Good fitted kitchen storage is less about fitting in more cupboards and more about making commonly used items easy to reach. Deep pan drawers near the hob are often more useful than a standard base cupboard. A pull-out bin close to the preparation area makes food waste and recycling easier to manage. Everyday plates and glasses should sit near the dishwasher or sink rather than at the far end of the room.
Before finalising the plan, take stock of what you already own. Large pans, baking trays, food processors, cleaning products and bulk shopping all need a home. This is also the time to be honest about what does not need prime cupboard space.
Consider a mix of drawers, cupboards and tall storage. Drawers give a clearer view of contents, while tall pull-out larders can be useful in larger kitchens. In a compact room, however, a full-height larder can dominate the layout. Open shelving can make a kitchen feel lighter, but it requires regular cleaning and works best for items you are happy to keep on display.
Choose materials for daily life
Cabinet doors, worktops and flooring should suit the household as well as the desired look. Matt finishes can soften a contemporary scheme, but some dark matt doors show fingerprints. Gloss reflects light and can help a compact kitchen feel brighter, although scratches may be more noticeable. Painted shaker-style doors offer a traditional feel but need a finish that can withstand frequent wiping.
Worktop selection is a balance of budget, maintenance and appearance. Laminate offers many convincing designs at a sensible price and is straightforward to replace. Solid wood brings warmth but needs ongoing care around water. Quartz is hard-wearing and low-maintenance, while natural stone has its own character and may need sealing. For a busy family kitchen, a surface that tolerates everyday use is often the better long-term choice than one that needs constant attention.
Use flooring that can cope with spills, foot traffic and cleaning. It should also work with any underfloor heating plan. If underfloor heating is being installed, decide on the floor build-up before ordering units, as finished floor levels can affect plinth heights, door clearances and appliance fitting.
Get lighting and sockets right before fitting
A single central ceiling light rarely provides enough usable kitchen lighting. Combine general lighting with brighter task lighting over worktops, sinks and cooking areas. Under-cabinet lighting can make food preparation safer and gives the room a calmer feel in the evening.
Plan sockets around real use. Include enough outlets for small appliances without filling the worktop with extension leads. Think about charging points, a radio, a cordless vacuum and any appliances that stay plugged in. Electrical work should be planned alongside the kitchen layout so sockets are not hidden behind appliances or placed too close to the sink and hob.
How to design a fitted kitchen with installation in mind
A smooth installation depends on sequencing. Strip-out, first-fix plumbing and electrics, plastering, flooring, cabinet fitting, worktops, second-fix services and decoration all need to happen in the right order. Worktops may need templating after base units are installed, which can create a short gap before final fitting.
Before work begins, agree who is responsible for each part of the project. This is especially valuable where plumbing, heating, electrical work, plastering and kitchen fitting overlap. Ask about dust control, waste removal, access to water during the work, and how long the kitchen will be out of action.
